BLOOD DONATION TO HEAL A NATION-Nairobi Disciples Donate Blood To Assist Victims Of Violence The town of Eldoret has been one of the worst hit by violence that continues to rear its ugly head around Kenya. In response to this, members of the Nairobi church turned out in good numbers to donate blood on Sunday 20 January.

PRAYERS FOR PEACE - First Service of 2008 Amid Bloody Violence in Nairobi Sunday 6 January 2008 was the first time in 2 weeks that disciples in Nairobi were able to gather together for worship following Christmas holidays and then bloody, gory violence in the wake of announcement of the result of the presidential election. Sunday 6 January was a day to pray for peace.

LIVING POSITIVELY FOR FOR G.O.D. WITH HIV The Metro and West regions of the Nairobi church recently had a six-week series of lessons about HIV and AIDS as part of Sunday service. While the teaching was excellently presented, highly informative and eye-opening, it struck the heart and brought the reality home to all when 2 disciples, Lucy and Dunson, shared about how they found out they were HIV-positive, how they reacted to finding out, and how they have learnt to live with HIV.

HOPE AND A DREAM As I prepared to leave the Nairobi church staff to work for HOPE worldwide Kenya (HWWK), I felt emptiness at surrendering my cherished passion and dream of working in the full-time ministry. However that was soon replaced by determination – resolve and excitement at the prospect of using the opportunity to make disciples where the church had not yet reached.

FOR G.O.D. AND FOR COUNTRY On Saturday 22 March 2006, in observance of Global Outreach Day (G.O.D.), HOPE worldwide Kenya's Nairobi programs partnered with volunteers from the Nairobi church to reach out to the city by mobilizing for blood donation and VCT (Voluntary Counseling And Testing For HIV), donating blood and holding the graduation of peer education trainees in downtown Nairobi.

EMBRACING HIV IN CHURCH Sunday 9th April, 2006 was a day with a difference in the East congregations of the Nairobi Christian Church and the culmination of several weeks of teaching. For the first time ever, a mobile Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) service was made available after service and more than a hundred of the disciples wanted to know their HIV status.

LAUNCH OF CHURCH IN MOMBASA - On Sunday the 5th of February 2006 the sun was not the only thing hot about the coastal city of Mombasa. An audience of 170 turned up the heat on Satan as a fired up congregation of saints launched the Mombasa church. This brings to four the number of International Churches Of Christ congregations in Kenya.

REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION - To the great joy of the 33-member Bujumbura congregation, the church in the Burundian capital was granted official registration in August after two years of paperwork, follow-up and prayers. Two months earlier, after much effort from the Bujumbura disciples, HOPE worldwide Burundi had been registered.

CELEBRATION OF SALVATION: Young Christians' Festivity In Kampala - "So then ,just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7 This was the theme that bound together both the young and old Christians as we in the Kampala International Church of Christ celebrated our 20/20 party. In the last 20 months, God has added 20 new souls to our number.

FOOTBALL, BAPTISMS AND HOPE - Sunday 10th July saw the finale of the latest HOPE worldwide Kenya (HWW-K)-sponsored football tournament. This one was different in that it combined different sectors and regions of the Nairobi Christian Church and gave a chance to participate to many who do not get one during the annual church league.

RETURN TO RWANDA - Samson Mokaya Back In Kigali On the 23rd of May 2005, Samson Mokaya returned to Kigali, Rwanda from Nairobi, to take up the leadership of our church there. This comes five years after he completed an initial stint in Kigali, and represents a return to a people who have always remained close to his heart. "In the course of my being in Kigali the first time, I truly fell in love with the people here and their culture," he says.

SUNDAY BEST IN BUJUMBURA - Great news from Benson Kyama, who, together with Didy Havyarimana (above left), leads of our church in Bujumbura,about a Sunday service on May 29, 2005: "We have just had a very exciting Bring-Your-Neighbour Sunday, and God glorified himself. The 34 of us had 140 in attendance. That was our highest ever!

HISTORY IS MADE AS DEACONS ARE APPOINTED - History was made on Sunday May 8th, when, for the first time in the history of our churches in East Africa, deacons were appointed to serve, in the Nairobi congregation. Anthony and Mary Mwanza and Oscar and Mary Ondatto, were, before an excited gathering of saints, commissioned by the evangelists to serve the church.

JOURNEY OF TRUTH IN BURUNDI - 2005 Bujumbura Women's Day Women's Day has been an annual event in the Bujumbura church, and this year, the11sisters of the Bujumbura Church of Christ saw 109 women gather on the 26th of February under the theme, "Journey Of Truth."

BAPTISMS IN THE PRESENCE OF MANY! 1 Timothy 6:12 – “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witness.” It is beyond doubt that the year 2005 will be the year of the Lord’s favor! God’s hand is already at work in East Africa, in this year 2005, and in a period of 30 days in Nairobi, God was able to bless us with 25 new brothers and sisters, 16 of whom were baptized or restored at three electric and exciting Sunday worship services of the East regions.

Rwandan Medley ONE BODY, ONE LORD-East Africa Leadership Conference, August 2004: >From Monday the 9th of August to Wednesday the 11th, the full-time ministry staff of the Nairobi church together with the leaders of our various East Africa congregations met for a conference under the theme of "One Body, One Lord." It was a time to be challenged and called higher from the word of God, to renew a commitment to being great disciples and godly leaders, and to bond as friends and as partners in the gospel.

PERSECUTION IN THE PEARL- Kampala Church Opposed Through National Media
Richard and Florence AhendaFrom seemingly out of nowhere, the American leader of the Mainline Church of Christ in Kampala unleashed a viscous campaign against the members of our Kampala congregation, waging his battle first through newspapers, then radio, and finally TV, where he made several outrageous claims about the disciples. While some more seasoned members of our congregations might be familiar with being so treated, for the seven-year-old Kampala church, the persecution caught many off-guard. In the colonial era Uganda was dubbed "The Pearl Of Africa." In this spiritual era, persecution had hit the pearl.

DARE TO DREAM-Eldoret Church 12th Anniversary Service
Eldoret Christian Church Congregational Singing On Sunday the 27th of June 2004, the Eldoret Christian Church celebrated its 12th anniversary with a special service. Present at the occasion were all the brothers who have led the church since it was planted in January 1992 by six college students, the members of the Eldoret congregation, and disciples from towns as varied and distant as Kitale, Kakamega, Malaba and Ugunja.

A heroic and faithful chapter in the history of the Arusha Christian Church has come to a conclusion, and a bright new one has begun, as the church will for the first time be led by nationals, baptized in the congregation, Joakim and Eva Palangyo.

ALAWAYES RELOCATE - Richard and Sarah Alawaye, previous leaders of the East africa family of churches, have relocated from Nigeria to Atlanta, USA, where they cvontinue to work in the full-time ministry.

BUJUMBURA WOMEN'S DAY
Bujumbura sisters As the sisters of the Bujumbura church in Burundi prayed and prepared for their 2004 Women's Day, few would have guessed just how well it would go. In a city that is regularly a theatre of shelling and gunfire as a protracted civil war in the country stretches on, the 7 sisters had 151 in attendance!


PLANTING THE SEED - The word of God continues to spread throughout Kenya, and in 2003 two Edwineseed plantings took root well outside the capital, Nairobi - in Kisii in Nyanza province, and in the Central Province town of Kianyaga. These towns are distant and are different in the story of how the gospel took root there, but in both cases, the outstanding thing is to see the power of the spoken word and the plan of our awesome God.

In July of 2003, Edwine Omaya (left) had to return to Kisii, his hometown, when Kenyatta University in Nairobi, where he is a student, was closed abruptly due to student unrest...


NATIONALS TAKE UP LEADERSHIP IN EAST AFRICA Mukenyas and Irungus The churches in East Africa, and especially in Nairobi, Kenya, have recently experienced a historic passing of the torch of leadership of the congregations in this region as nationals, Steve and Carol Mukenya and George and Anne Irungu, have been appointed to steer the work following the return to the US of Herve and Janet Fleurant. Communities and congregations of God's people have, throughout the ages, also experienced similar transition, with its accompanying simultaneous emotions of sadness and loss on one hand and of excitement and expectation on the other...

WOMEN'S DAY 2003 - "Through Heaven's Eyes"
Women's Day InvitationMonths of prayer, preparation and perspiration culminated on Sunday October 26th with the Nairobi church's women's day, the annual highlight of the women's ministry, which was held at the prestigious Kenyatta International Conference Centre Plenary Hall in downtown Nairobi, with 3 298 in attendance.

The sisters were excited to welcome Sarah Alawaye as the keynote speaker. Sarah, who leads the women's ministry in the Nigerian churches, is Kenyan, was baptized in Nairobi, and led the Nairobi women's ministry prior to relocating to Lagos...
MISSION MINUTES For generations, men and women who were willing to leave behind their homes and go to distant lands among peoples of foreign languages have played a major role in advancing the cause of God Almighty. In East Africa, brothers and sisters with that same heart of missionary zeal and revolutionary faith are helping to lead churches and to serve God in the various countries of this geographic region. Get to hear from them and learn from and with them in interviews with the various individuals.
Herve, Janet and SierraTRIBUTE TO A SPECIAL FAMILY In July 2003, after fourteen years in Africa, planting and building churches, Hervé and Janet Fleurant and their children, all of whom were born on this continent, left to return to the United States of America.

They spent the last four-and-a-half years in Kenya, where they have left an indelible impression on the hearts of many, and in this article, which comprises the comments of different individuals from across the spectrum of disciples in East Africa, we frame the unique impact that Hervé and Janet have had on us here in East Africa.
