18 July 2005 FOOTBALL, BAPTISMS AND HOPE Sunday 10th July saw the finale of the latest HOPE worldwide Kenya (HWW-K)-sponsored football tournament. This one was different in that it combined different sectors and regions of the Nairobi Christian Church and gave a chance to participate to many who do not get one during the annual church league.
On hand at the occasion was the campus ministry dance troupe, known as SWAT, that includes Ejidiah, who has been a volunteer with HWW-K and only days earlier was baptized into Christ, one of several who have become Christians in the last few months after meeting disciples while volunteering with HWW-K. It has been very encouraging to see that as HWW-K helps many youth socially through their programmes, youth have also been transformed spiritually as well. Before the game, Charles Okwemba, a member of the North region and professional footballer with Tusker FC, was presented with a gift by HWW-K for service to HWW-K and to the community at the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial in April this year. A half-time presentation by the Livity group both enlighted and entertained the crowd, with a skit about knowing one's sero-status and living psotively with HIV/AIDS. For those who understand and appreciate football, the first and fourth goals were classics, one a lob from 40 meters out, and the other a spectacular volley from 20 meters. While North/Teens overcame Campus/Kibera 3-1, all were winners as they shared an afternoon of fun, football, fellowship and family.
