A few months ago 7 disciples in the western Kenyan town of Kakamega managed to gather 51 people together for a grand worship service! Kakamega is the hub of Kenya's Western Province.
It all started when Paul Wesonga, a disciple from Eldoret, got a job in Kakamega, at the Western University of Science and Technology. He would travel to Eldoret for Sunday services and hold bible talks in Kakamega during on week days.
God blessed Paul with marriage to Nancy and the bible talks swelled with visitors. Thus was conceived the idea to hold a Sunday service on campus in Kakamega. Five Christians from Eldoret joined Paul and Nancy for a special Sunday.
The university administration allowed Paul to use the main college auditorium for the church service. It was clear that God was with us.
Visitors from both on and off of campus filled the hall with singing and zeal to know more about the bible and how to be saved as Daniel Kung'u preached about the word of God.
Several people started studying the bible that afternoon, and, to the glory of God, three of them have since been baptized into Christ. And that's not all the fruit that the church has had, because in the last few days God has blessed Paul and Nancy with a baby girl, Gilian.
Following the inaugural Sunday service, the five disciples continue to meet every Sunday for service, with an average attendance of 30 people, and during the week for bible talk. A sister from Nairobi who recently attended church in Kakamega described the service as powerful.
Paul says, "We see the hand of God here daily. First we had a baby church and now a baby girl. God is gracious! The young disciples are giving their best and we are collectively responsible for everything. We are growing fast individually and as a church." Expressing gratitude for the discipling and support that they have received, Paul adds, "The Eldoret church has devotedly baby-sat us."
"May God glorify himself in Kakamega," Paul says. And that surely is the prayer of all of us for the town of Kakamega and the entire region of Western Kenya.
