27 September 2008FROM LIES TO LIGHT 2008 Nairobi East Regions Ladies’ Special Convention By Albert Simiyu. Additional contributions from Josephine Muinde For years the sisters in the Nairobi church have been organizing and hosting women in a now popular event dubbed "the ladies special convention." Formerly Women's Day, this function has won a place of honor on the sisters’ calendar not only for the pomp, parade and pageantry that comes with it, but more so for the power, poignancy and purposefulness it embodies. And this year's edition, with its theme “The Lies Women Believe,” truly made a difference.
The East regions organized the 2008 convention, and every sister was upbeat and zealous. And as the commencement hour approached, the venue, YMCA Shauri Moyo turned into a hive of activity and a sea of colour as sisters and their friends sauntered in donning elegant and diverse regalia. A great job of evangelism had been done because in less than an hour the hall had swelled with both new and familiar faces, all exuding high expectations. The choir sang their hearts out and sister Ann Mulandi and her group presented a powerful and humerous skit which emphasized the message well.
Today, stress visits many as a most unwelcome intruder . It cuts across the board, but seems to take more female casualties than male. Women, particularly in Africa, have lived through the indignity of subservience and perceived gullibility. During his PowerPoint presentation, Deacon Julius Nguku arrested every breath by his elaborate lecture on this very pertinent issue.
Shades of opinion shaping society have built stereotypes that in- depth study of God's word has come to downplay as lies women believe. It was on the basis of this theme that Deaconess Margaret Nguku meticulously attempted to disabuse women folk of this age long deception that in part thrives on their complex of inferiority. The hall filled to capacity with over six hundred and thirty women in attendance spoke volumes of how women are desperate to free themselves from ignorant beliefs. At the end of the day, we saw God exalting himself. Smiles dotted the compound as some lined up for snacks while others enthusiastically exchanged contacts with disciples. And a lot of women espoused aspirations to fire lies and hire gospel truth through organized bible study. |
