The Heat Is On
On Sunday the 5th of February 2006 the sun was not the only thing hot about the coastal city of Mombasa. Apart from the climactic conditions which, together with the sand and the surf make this a popular holiday destination, the disciples turned up the heat on Satan as a fired up congregation of saints launched the Mombasa church. This brings to four the number of International Churches Of Christ congregations in Kenya.

Mark in the New Testament records that Jesus began his ministry beside the sea, and, kicking off what promises to be a sensational seaside synergy of saints, disciples came from churches and fellowships as far apart and varied as Nairobi, Eldoret, Njoro and Bujumbura for the grand occasion.

Preaching God glorified himself as, with song, celebration and practical preaching of the Word, 170 were bonded in fellowship and drawn closer to God. Evengelist Steve Mukenya preached on “Making Your Heart A Home For God,” calling all to develop great trust in God and to base their faith on the bible. “Let us be a people who practice the bible from our hearts,” he urged, concluding by exhorting, “Let us be a people who truly love God from our hearts.”

It was extremely encouraging to see many men and women remaining behind after the service to study the bible.

15 disciples who have either moved to Mombasa from different towns or have been baptized in the last few months have been joined by Edwine Omaya, who will be leading the Mombasa church as full-time minister.

We Are Family

A number of the out-of-towners have relatives and friends in Mombasa who were at the Sunday service.

Dorothy Kuru’s daughter, Rita, has just moved to Mombasa to study at the Mombasa Polytechnic and she says, “I know that my daughter is at home here in Mombasa since we now have a church here. Four of her cousins were at today’s service and it is my prayer that she will have a great positive influence on them.” Dorothy’s brother and his wife were also at the service as were a brother and sister-in-law to Dorothy’s husband, Paul.

William Auki, who oversees the leadership of the Mombasa church together with his wife, Victoria, grew up in Mombasa. 3 of his brothers were at church, as well as a sister of his and several of her in-laws. “My prayer is that my family members will get baptized and my sister will be restored. It has been inspiring today that many began studying the bible. In every corner [after service,] people were talking about the word of God. One of my former classmates was at church today and his comment was, ‘I can see that the Lord has been with you.’ ”

I Have A Dream

Back in 1990, shortly after getting baptized in Nairobi, William preached publicly in Mombasa during university vacation. He says, “This has been my dream since I was baptized and is a follow-up to the very first preaching here in 1990.”

While Mombasa is indeed a famous resort city, with the advent of the launch of the Mombasa Church of Christ it is our vision and conviction that the city will be known not just for sand, sea and sun, but for the ceaseless service of selfless saints and sweet symphonic songs in celebration of salvation.
