ONYECHI AND DEYSI OGUAGHA - WITH GOD, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE

15th Anniversary Of The Planting Of The Nairobi Church

Onyechi And Deysi OguaghaOnyechi and Deysi Oguagha now live in Johannesburg, South Africa with their three children, Stephen (13), Andrew (11) and Jenifer (6), where they lead the church and oversee our Southern Africa family of churches.

What is your fondest memory of the early days in Nairobi?

Onyechi: Hanging out at the University of Nairobi from main campus to Chiromo with the guys on a daily basis.

Deysi: We were the only disciples in the city so we were so focused on our purpuse. I remember leaving home early in the morning everyday with the goal of making disciples and coming back home tired and happy.

What was the scariest thing for you in the early days in Nairobi?

O: Being arrested by the military police.

D: I had never preached publicly before in my life. It was scary but fun.

What motivated you to come to Nairobi to plant the church?

O: The love of my people, the Africans.

D: There was a map of the world that had in it all the churches of disciples. The countries that had no disciples were colored yellow . The whole continent of Africa was yellow. My heart was so eager to come and make a difference, so I did, and I am so grateful for it.

How do you feel that the experience of planting the Nairobi church helped you grow as a person and as a disciple?

O: It taught me that with God, nothing is impossible.

D: I came to Africa as a 21 year old, just having gotten married. I had never been to Africa before. I was full of dreams for God and for myself. God has given me more than I could ask or imagine. I was asked to be in the full time ministry 2 months after we arrived in Nairobi. God has blessed that small seed of faith that we had at the beginning and has made it grow. There are now over 50 churches on the continent.

Planting the church in Nairobi gave me zeal, faith and hope. The experience taught me to have the zeal to evangelize daily, gave me the faith that anyone can become a disciple, and the filled me with hope that we can change this continent for Christ.
