31 July 2006
Not even low temperatures and cloudy skies could dampen the spirits of the Nairobi disciples as they met together at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 30 July. The leaders of the East Africa satellite churches were present as well as the leaders of the church in Antananarivo (Madagascar). Special “visitors” on the day were Hervé and Janet Fleurant, who lived in Kenya and led the churches in East Africa for five years and who currently lead the church in Denver, Colorado (USA).
And to crown an exciting day, William and Victoria Auki, in the process of moving from leading the Kibera region to leading the West region, were appointed evangelist and women’s ministry leader to the thrill of the congregation. Following electric congregational singing, and a rousing solo by Mercy Nandika, James Mwang’ombe from the campus ministry shared the communion message. Hervé then preached about giving up selfishness in order to overcome sin, appreciate the price Jesus paid to purchase us, and understand that God feels that we are worth the price and that people we need to reach out to and help become disciples are also worth the price. Earlier in the morning Janet had preached to the women about being refreshed even as older disciples, having a walk with God, and setting specific spiritual goals for ourselves. The previous day, Janet met the women bible talk leaders after which Hervé met all bible talk leaders and talked about being the temple of God. Many Christians were delighted and called higher in the course of the weekend’s events. Jarrett Odwallo was “exhilarated” by the appointment of William and Victoria, adding, “It is hard to put into words what I feel.” Anita Mtwaiti said that the example of William and Victoria “is an opening for many more on staff to be appointed to the same.” Judy Awino felt that Janet’s Sunday class was “inspiring and renewing. It called me back to making goals for myself even this late in the year.” Nellie felt the class was “very deep,” and Lillian Anyango saw the need, as one who has been a disciple for many years, to keep growing. “I was called back to things that I have started to take for granted and I also now see the need to love by faith.” Over the past weekend, the Word has truly been preached, and men and women who live radically by its truth have been honoured, as is their due. To God be the glory as he continues to work in inspiring ways in the lives of his disciples. |
