LESSONS IN PRAYER FROM A FIVE YEAR OLD

By Tony Kinyanjui

Sunday 21st October 26, 2007 will go down the memory line as a day where great lessons of humility were learned by 8 disciples from Nairobi Christian Church who had visited disciples in the town of Makindu, a 3-4 hours’ drive from Nairobi.

Being with the disciples in Makindu was fantastic and after a great message of unconditional love and communion message where we actually ate together it was time to go home. Little did we know what God had in store for us.

We had hoped to leave Makindu at 4 pm in order to be in Nairobi by 8pm. With the stories and laughter being shared as we walked to the bus stop, we didn’t notice the passage of time. Eventually getting to the bus stop, we found a crowd of others waiting to travel. The buses and vans were either full or had limited space and could not take all of us.

Our first real chance of traveling come when we got a vehicle charging Kenya Shillings (Ksh) 500/-, well above the usual fare for that trip. “No way are we paying such an inflated price,” we unanimously felt. The clock was ticking and time was running out. Desperation was setting in. We decided to walk up the road so that we could get our means before the vehicles reached the thick crowd.

Sure enough a vehicle came charging us Ksh 450/- and offered to create space for us all. Another vehicle came which offered to charge us Ksh 400/-. We all ran into it and made ourselves comfortable. But due to unexplained reasons the driver later said he could not take us.

Again we waited. It was heading to 8 pm with no means available. We despaired of getting any vehicle back to Nairobi that night. Some suggested we sleep over and leave early in the morning, for which none had budgeted and which would have made getting to work in Nairobi the next morning rather awkward.

Paul Michael Rambo Rayola Paul Rambo Rayola (right) is the 5 year-old son of Rayola and Georgeanne Osanya-Nyynéque, He was with us throughout and when we were despairing he suggested that we pray, but we were busy trying to flag down vehicles in desperation. Paul is not the kind of child to give up, much like his parents. He resulted to call me to go aside and pray with him. I cannot honestly say that I was willing, but something made me join him. I was amazed by the mature passionate way he implored to the Lord God. It was as if those words were not coming from him. After that he asked me to pray. He had some authority that I could not question, and I prayed.

Almost immediately after our prayers a vehicle came along. We had to pay ksh 500/-. This time we were not complaining. Paul prayed for our safe journey back home which still amazed us all. We got home safely and we all humbled by the day’s experience.
