18 November 2004 VOLLEYBALL, FOOTBALL AND FUN FOR ALL"Physical training is of some value..." 1 Timothy 4:8
Sunday November 14th saw the culmination of the 2004 Nairobi Christian Church volleyball and football leagues. Despite the rain that had fallen sporadically throughout the morning and early afternoon, nothing could dampen the spirits of the disciples as they gathered for a festival of sports and spirituality. Sunshine broke through the clouds shortly before the football kick-off, reflecting the joy that radiated from among those present.
The league proved, as always, to be a great event for bringing together the members of the church from their various neighbourhoods and ministries in a spirit of fun and family among players, officials, organizers and spectators. This was emphasized by evangelist George Irungu when he addressed the crowd at the trophy-handover ceremony. As Gitau Ng'ang'a had said earlier during the course of the tournament, the league "was not just awesome for competition, but for building the fellowship and encouraging the brothers and sisters." Ultimately as disciples we are all on the same team and running together for a prize that we will all share and a crown that we will all wear.
HOPE worldwide Kenya generously sponsored the leagues by providing equipment and securing the venues and the services of qualifies referees.
For the record, the East won the volleyball title (left) and Youth-And-North took the honours in football (right). Physical training is indeed of some value, especially when it becomes a forum for not only competitiveness but more importantly togetherness, to which we eagerly look forward from similar events in future. |
