AGATHA KIOKO - Middle East Region, Nairobi

"Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him." Acts 8:2

Agatha Kioko was a great friend and inspiration to many, and many are mourning deeply for her. Despite the hostile opposition of her in-laws, Agatha became a disciple, getting baptized in August 1995, and although the disapproval continued, Agatha held strongly to her faith. As a result, her two children, Angela and Andrew, have been part of the church since their mother's baptism.

On the 8th of April, 2003, Agatha was hospitalized and hours later died of a stroke.

As testified in the eulogy read out at her burial, "Agatha was a very caring and loving mother. Even after the sad demise of her husband barely three years ago, she worked tirelessly, [to provide] for her children."

Many have great memories of Agatha, and her faith clearly stands out in the hearts of many.

Eunice Mbuva, Agatha's discipler, remembers that "Agatha was a calm person. She was always very encouraging and easy to get along with."

Joyce Maganga, Mary (Gitau) Bolton and Agatha were work colleagues back in 1995, and the three of them remained incredibly close friends even after later being transferred to different offices. Joyce says, "We became close when working in the same office, which is when I got to study the Bible with her, and after her baptism we became even closer, sharing so many things in life together. Agatha's perseverance really stands out to me. She would stand up no matter what the issue, especially in her marriage."

Mary recalls much the same and adds that "Agatha was a very close friend and never held back from correcting me when she noticed something spiritually wrong. Agatha would not compromise on God's standards for fear of upsetting our friendship but would tell me what I needed to hear. At the same time she was caring and concerned. She was always there for me and would never hold back from helping me, with encouragement, advice or even money."

One of Agatha's closest friends was Lois Kioko, whom she discipled from August 1997 until her passing. The two would spend every Sunday afternoon together having lunch, and their children also became great friends. "Initially I was apprehensive about being discipled by Agatha, but she won me over by her gentleness and humility," shares Lois.

"Agatha's great, child-like faith was a great inspiration to me," continues Lois. "You'd especially see her faith during challenging times, like a two-year period in which she lost her husband, her father, her only sister and then her mother-in-law. In all of this she did not question God but trusted him fully." Says Mary, "In circumstances that might have caused others to give up she never caved in but held strong to her faith."

With tears and with fond memories, Agatha's close friends each say, "I miss her so much." Lois says that for her their friendship meant "fun on earth serving God. She was a soul mate." But as Joyce adds, "I know that Agatha would not trade places with us." "She has gone ahead and is cheering me on," says Lois, "and if I keep the faith then we will see each other again."

Congratulations, Agatha, on finishing the race. We look forward to being with you again soon.
