19 April 2008 AT GOD’S OWN TIME Florence follows Husband Into The Kingdom—9 Years Later By Albert Simiyu, simalba01@yahoo.com
For centuries God has been calling out in love for men to choose and seek him, and his call went out to Florence Onimbo. Her past is one woven with a religious fabric whose resistance to God’s truth has left her with a tale to tell.
Florence met and got married to Jack Onimbo, whose life both confess was a choking mess. He was a real drunkard whose penchant for bad company communicated very threatening signals about her future and marriage. Many attest of how one time Jack drenched himself in alcohol and pitched at the centre of a highway literally begging an oncoming motorist to run over him. But in what Florence strongly believes to be divine intervention, her husband turned around and gave God a chance in his life. In 1999 Jack surrendered his life to Christ. To friends, foes and family this surprise came as a long awaited sigh of relief. While everybody else chanted ululations, Florence inwardly nursed mild critical thoughts, almost challenging God’s wisdom—“Why did he choose this ‘unestablished church’? ” she reasoned as she explored new strategies of appealing to God for Jack’s “full deliverance.” All this notwithstanding, Jack’s spiritual growth showed remarkable progress. Florence felt slightly threatened and in a bid to ward off the looming disapproval switched camp to another denomination. Many sisters made inroads to study with Florence but the doctrine base that she confessed would not allow her to respond. “She was the rugged cross God entrusted on my shoulders,” Jack quips. But as God had it, Toney and Ricky, the couple’s oldest sons, followed their father’s suit, studied the bible and got baptized in the teens ministry. With this development Florence felt lonely, like a fish out of water, but vowed to fight on. Once in a while, when on best terms with her husband, Florence would succumb to Jack’s courtesy and visit church. She would, however, be keen to keep unrelenting fruit-thirsty disciples at bay. Come 2006 the evangelistic prompting from sisters started having an inevitable effect on Florence. Didy Akello, she proudly admits, did an amazing job of reaching out to her, employing both love and grace.
As more sisters made evangelistic overtures, Florence’s frequency in visiting church increased. “I got a soft and changed heart towards God’s kingdom when I did the Sin and Repentance study,” says Florence. She was convicted by the radical way in which the kingdom handles sin as opposed to her former groups of worship. After this convicting study, Florence never looked back and on the tenth of February 2008 she declared Jesus the Lord and Saviour of her life to the glory of God, the joy of the church and Jack’s pride. Florence’s vision and dream are to rise up the ranks of leadership in the women’s ministry and make a big difference for God. |
