RESIST THE DEVIL
By Steve Mukenya
In many cases we are aware of what we should not do. Our consciences remind us of it too. So, here we will look at some things that we should do.
Job 9:4
Job's wife and friends were attempting to get him to stop trusting God. When you do not resist God, you will end up scathed. If you persistently resist God, you will permanently damage your conscience. The solution is to make up your mind to live God's way.
Things to do and master to resist the devil:
HUMILITY
Without humility, you will not bother to want to know God's way.
Matthew 3:13-17
Stand your ground. You don't have to do what everyone else does. Others on campus might have members of the opposite sex in their rooms at all sorts of hours, but you do not have to do the same.
If you imitate the sins of others, then you will also face the consequences of sin that they do.
Philippians 2:6
Jesus had the right to prominence but chose to be a servant. Choose humility. It takes humility to ask for help I your academics.
BE A REAL FRIEND
Luke 10:38-42
Friendships anchor you. They help you to be steady in the storm. As Jesus did here, a friend corrects another and directs another spiritually. A real friend can also take correction.
If you, as a brother, have liked a sister deeply who turned out not to like as deeply, you can still be a good friend rather than have a resentful attitude towards her.
Hebrews 2:10,11
Real friends help each other. Let us help to make each other holy and to open up in order to be helped to become holy.
REALNESS
Mark 3:17
Jesus felt that as much as these men were Sons of Thunder, prone to losing their cool, he could still be their friend and not be judgmental and distance himself from them.
Mark 1:19,20
Sometimes we are selective about who we are willing to reach out to or what kind of person we are willing to reach out to and call to Christ. Jesus did not overlook these men because of their hotheadedness but instead reached out to them.
Luke 9:51-56
Part of being real is to confront people and situations. Confrontation is not about shouting but addressing people directly. Sometimes we are scared to be real enough to confront people because we are afraid that if we are real then people will not like us.
Mark 10:35-37
The request of James and John may have been ill placed, but they were real enough to make it. And that is the only way that learning can take place - by being open.
OPENNESS
John 13:21
This statement would surely have unsettled the group.
Mathew 26:39
In prayer, Jesus was open about the way he was feeling. Be open about your feelings, struggles and concerns.
TRUSTING
John 19:25-27
Jesus trusted John to look after his mother, yet this is a man who, together with the others, had run away and abandoned Jesus. Trusting people has to do with trusting God to work through those people.
