KEEPING IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we play an important role in each others' lives as we influence each other's thoughts, feelings, speech or actions to be more godly. The aim of this as Paul the Apostle writes is to present each other perfect in Christ (Colossians 1:28).
However, we cannot forget that we have a past that is always trying to catch up with us, courtesy of Satan, and our own sinful desires. It is as if we have received bad programming for many years before our salvation, and so the Scriptures rightly admonish us in Romans 12;2 not to conform but to be transformed. Despite all this it still is possible to keep in step with the Holy Spirit. Here are things to keep in mind:
1. WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION
Romans 8:12-15
As sons and daughters of God we have an obligation to put to death the misdeeds of the body. We are obligated, bound or compelled by Christ's love and life not to live according to our sinful nature (v. 12) but live righteous lives.
The admonition is clear and the choice is ours, whether we want to flourish in our spiritual lives or die a spiritual death (v. 13). Thank God, for he helps us in our battle of dying to self daily.
Galatians 5:16-18
Daily, God's Holy Spirit prompts you to do right while your sinful nature inclines more towards sinning.
Q. What have you been giving in to?
Q. What will you give in today?
Make the right choice and do not grieve God's Holy Spirit, for God wants you to do what is righteous, not what you want.
2. MAKE USE OF GOD'S SPIRIT
Don't just sit there; make use of the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:6-16
We have so much at our disposal through God's Spirit - God's secret wisdom (v. 7), all things (v. 10), even the deep things of God. The question is: Are you learning? Are you searching? Or have you quenched the Spirit's fire?
Saul's life became a mess when the Spirit of God left him (1 Samuel 16:14). When we stop making use of the Spirit, the word of God become foolishness to us.
Let us search the Scriptures more as we transform our minds, and pray more earnestly that God will continue revealing his mind to us as he fills us up with the Holy Spirit.
Practicals:
- Share with someone the battle going on inside of you as regularly as you can - daily, if possible.
- Decide to overcome in your areas of weakness.
- Pray that the Spirit will lead you to someone open. Take note of it as it takes place.
