CAMPUS CONFERENCE 2002: REVOLUTION!

On Friday January 4th, the disciples of the Nairobi Christian Church Campus Ministry converged on the Central YMCA for their first ever conference. The theme for the two-day event was "Revolution!" as the disciples set their minds on turning their personal lives and their campuses upside-down for Christ in the year 2002. Guest speakers were William Auki and Steve and Carol Mukenya.

William, a former member of the campus ministry, was originally reached out to by Jarrett Odwallo, the current leader of the campus ministry, while the two were freshmen studying architecture at the University of Nairobi. He spoke on the need to walk with God and have great, spiritual friendships if we are to be bold and have an impact on our campuses. The Mukenya’s, meeting the men and women separately, exhorted the disciples to aim for a high standard in their purity.

Jarrett opened the conference by focussing all on the need to have a great walk with God and closed it with a much-needed message on "Victory in Academics." In between, Stanley Ochieng’, Fred Arogo, Jane Adhiambo and Georgeanne Rayola called all higher with classes on "Godly Character", and Rayola Osanya with a class on personal finances.

These classes, combined with prayer and discipling groups and with various indoor and outdoor games, made for an excellent conference. The conference was inspiring and brought the campus disciples together in a great way following the Christmas and New Year break that saw many travel to various destinations.

Many of the disciples expressed that it was a perfect way to start the year and to get everyone spiritually focussed for the challenges ahead. The Team Times had great impact. Said one disciple, "It was so refreshing to get to open up and share and get input." Another said, "It was encouraging to know that I am not alone in the spiritual challenges that I face." One brother’s remark was that, "It was quality and contained all that I need to be armed for the year." Those speakers who were themselves disciples on campus in the early ‘90’s shared from their days as students, and one sister commented that it "brought campus alive."

Last year was encouraging in the campus ministry as the men grew from 28 to 46 before graduation and the women from 23 to 34. This year the goal is to take it even higher on campus in purity, faith, love and life, and to bring about an unprecedented spiritual revolution on the campuses and colleges of the city of Nairobi in 2002!
