MOVING MOUNTAINS Nairobi Campus Camp 2006 Compiled by Simon Muia and edited by Rayola Osanya-Nyynéque Nairobi's campus disciples packed their bags and headed out of town for the 2006 Campus Camp entitled "Moving Mountains." The site for the event was perfectly placed away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was incredibly picturesque, set on a riverbank a distance from Mount Kenya, vast and filled with unique and endemic species of flora and fauna, apart from being home to the African Hyrax and bush babies. The tents were in perfect shape, standing on a perched platform on the shoulder of the mountain.
Two days of fellowship, moving bible classes, walks in the forest and team-building activities proved memorable and momentous. Says one of the participants, "The prayer sessions in the mornings and before bedtime elevated our spirits and taught us the importance of oneness in spirit. We learnt also that we can and should practice unity in prayers, in purpose and in righteousness, and not just hold it as an ideal, so that we may continue to experience growth."
Another lesson learnt was in the area of dating, which, the participants were reminded, is designed and purposed for encouraging and so should be treasured and not abused. Other topics covered included temptation, forgiveness, love among disciples, helping the needy, how to manage stress and having great faith. The participants broke into groups and, on the last night, performed skits around a bonfire, the theme of which was unity in the body of Christ. On the last day there was Sunday service beside the river. Many said that it made them feel like they were back in Jesus' days, when Christ would teach by the lake. "We sang songs of praise as we worshiped in oneness," recalls one participant.
The depth of the impact of the camp was evident from what various people shared afterwards. Ejiddiah said, "The camp has inspired me to draw closer to people than ever before and this I will treasure." Similarly, Garrett shared, "Friendship is the one thing I will dare not to take for granted." Shiko's sentiments are that "the chord of love that we have forged will take us to heaven"
Lucy said, "I know that am not yet a disciple, but the insecurity I thought I would feel among everyone is gone and I felt appreciated."
Rose shared, "I want to build relationships with disciples and get to know everyone as family." Marion's feedback is that "as a sacrifice to my God, I want to intensify my reaching out in order to help people know God." Ezekiel shared, "Personally I have come to gain an understanding of God that I will have to cultivate. I now can see beyond the mountains in my life. The prayer times we had, have taught me how to pray, in the mornings and throughout the day." Lilly says, "I think I could say a lot but in a nut shell, I have learnt to let God be God in my life." While the theme for the camp was "Moving Mountains," the site, the scenery, the Scriptures and the skits at the event certainly moved hearts, and as the student saints return to their colleges the future on campus looks like one in which the disciples will walk together, walk by faith and allow God to move mountains to the glory of his name.
