ZEBEDEE FOLLOWS CHRIST When, at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called the sons of Zebedee to
follow him, they left their father and became disciples of Christ. When Hudson
Mutsili, a teen from Mathare North in Nairobi, started studying the Bible to
become a disciple in late 2001, he invited his father Zebedee to come
along too. Zebedee studied the Bible and, one month before his 51st birthday,
was baptized into Christ. A day later Hudson went to the water. Hudson’s sister,
Beatrice, also started coming to church, and she too became a disciple. In this modern day version, Mark 1:20 might read something like this: "Without
delay he called them, and they left, with their father, Zebedee, and followed
him." Zebedee is extremely grateful for his son’s leading him to the truth,
and says of their relationship now that they are both Christians, "We can now
plan things together and exchange ideas. I no longer dictate things to Hudson.
I let him express himself and I listen to him." Hudson, a Form Three student, says, "I feel good because now we all get the
chance to attain eternal life as a family." He adds, "I look forward to helping
my mother become a disciple." Don’t forget that the mother of Zebedee’s sons
was a part of Jesus’ ministry – Matthew 27:56. Jesus gave the nickname Sons of Thunder to Zebedee’s boys in the first century,
and this time around Hudson of Thunder has had a great impact on his father.
He is a great example of what one teen can do with faith, conviction and a dream. |
